Bball nets, ping pong tables and high school gym markings... Our Marylebone store just got a new look.
New season. New store. Here at KOIBIRD we change our offering biannually, basing our seasonal edits on a theme or destination. In the past we’ve covered California, Korea, Lagos, the Eastern Bloc and beyond, each time curating a mix of designers from the destination as well as transforming our Marylebone store. This season we got active, with our latest edit KOIBIRD Breaks a Sweat.
“IT’S ALWAYS OUR AIM TO INJECT THE FUN BACK INTO SHOPPING.”
ICYMI from the campaign, inspiration was pulled from the 1980s and early 90s. Avoiding bubble gum clichés, we went less Jane Fonda VHS workout, more Steven Meisel in those US Vogue shoots. When selecting the colour palette – which is always, shall we say, ‘bold’ at KOIBIRD – visions of mail order catalogues and nostalgic sports ads were firm in our minds. A kaleidoscopic world of mint green, magenta purple and fuchsia pink was created through the whole interior, and the high school gym markings, which were lifted from our favourite Brat Pack movies, give full Breakfast Club vibes.
With UK stores being closed we’ve missed browsing, splurging and styling outfits in the fitting room (we *almost* even missed 360-degree mirrors). So, it was more important than ever to create a unique, playful retail experience, welcoming you back with a full dose of serotonin-infused retail therapy. To achieve this, we selected and sourced a series of props to reinforce a mood that is fitness, but you know, fun. Chinatown Market basketball nets are positioned inside and out of the store, so you can shoot hoops as well as shop! Adding to this, the window boasts a vintage (fully useable) exercise bike, so you can get your Bridget Jones on.
Old gymnastic hoops hang from the ceiling above the till, and in front of it stands our Art of Ping Pong ArtTable, which was made bespoke as part of an exclusive collaboration. Less of your average ping pong table found in a family garage, more of a work of art, the ArtTables can be mounted on the wall – so even when you’re not playing, it can be thoroughly enjoyed and shown off! The Art of Ping Pong has worked with several prestigious brands and artists, including Camille Walala, Anthony Burrill, Hattie Stewart and many more. For its KOIBIRD collaboration, the table was designed with the same signature hues infused in the store, along with the logo created specifically for KOIBIRD Breaks a Sweat. A limit of 10 tables are available to purchase, as well as a series of different bats from the brand, making it a real stand-out piece for any collector or ping pong advocate.
