FILMS FOR FRIGHT

Grab the popcorn and turn off the lights - these are the best horror films to watch this Halloween.

Pumpkins are filling our Instagram feeds - be this for carving, decor or spiced lattes, which can only mean one thing - it’s Halloween season! And whilst no, we won’t be attending a fabulous fancy dress party and should probably have lower expectations for Heidi Klum’s costume, we will do more of what we’ve done all year - watch TV! We break down our favourite horrors to watch for All Hallow’s Eve, from 90s slashers to Hitchcock classics and take a closer look at the now-iconic costumes.

JENNIFER’S BODY

An often overlooked horror for its tame scares and teen storyline, but with a cast that includes Amanda Seyfried, Adam Brody and Megan Fox as a hot vampire, you can pretty much consider this a Halloween edition of The O.C and Mean Girls.

THE BIRDS

Because most people have already seen Psycho (if you haven’t, please do), another suspenseful Hitchcock classic is The Birds. As you may have guessed, it’s not one for those who have a fear of our feathered friends.

HOCUS POCUS

Bette Midler and SJP as the Salem sisters, and a talking cat very in the style of Sabrina the Teenage Witch?! If your childhood didn’t have Hocus Pocus, then you should probably see a therapist.

CARRIE (1976)

A horror classic starring Sissy Spacek and a young John Travolta, Carrie is a revenge tale of a girl with telekinetic powers on prom night. The worst prom night you’ll ever witness, trust us.

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER

Every decade turns out a few great teen slashers. The 70s had Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the 80s had Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th, and the 90s showcased the quintessential teen horror franchise, Scream. So for those of you who’ve seen the classics, and love the 90s dressing, enter I Know What You Did Last Summer. It’s teen movie royalty, with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jnr and Ryan Phillipe.

AMERICAN PSYCHO

Not your usual horror, but still truly horrific, Christian Bale plays the psychopathic protagonist of Brett Easton Ellis’ gruesome book of the same name. The book is actually so graphic, it goes down in history as one of the most banned books of all time. Outside of it being a superb adaptation of the murderous investment banker that idolizes Donald Trump, we watch for two main reasons: Patrick Bateman’s beauty regime and Reese Witherspoon's classic yuppie outfits.

GET OUT

Jordan Peele’s 2017 box office smash hit Get Out is considered one of the best films of the 21st Century for its representation of racial tensions in the USA. It follows Chris, an African American guy who visits his white girlfriend’s family, to discover a dark secret about them. An Oscar winner featuring rising star Daniel Kaluuya.

BEETLEJUICE

Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice is high on our 80s cult comedy movie list. Scares in this movie are like those you get on ghost train at fair - a bit cheap, a bit one dimensional but funny nonetheless. Burton himself being a sort of king of the goths, it’s no surprise that Winona Ryder’s teen misfit character harnesses all-black dressing like a pro. Where you won’t lose sleep over Michael Keaton ghostly activities, you just might over the ability to layer black this well.
