What to do for the most crucial outfit of the year

WORDS BY FLORA MACDONALD JOHNSTON

New Year’s Eve is stressful. There, we said it. What to do? Who to do it with? And perhaps the hardest question of them all - what to wear and how to wear it? To solve this annual dilemma we consulted three of our favourite stylists on the subject. Here’s what they had to say on all matters concerning New Year’s Eve dressing, whether you’re staying at home or going out.

DON’T FORGET YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

Voluminous and flamboyant swimwear and ready-to-wear in superior fabrics and flattering cuts.

COMFORT IS MORE THAN JUST A PHYSICAL THING

“The most important thing to me [when it comes to New Year’s Eve dressing] is to feel comfortable wherever I am and whoever I’m with. There’s nothing worse than feeling self-conscious about what you’re wearing. It can stop you from feeling relaxed and having fun.”

THE BEST NEW YEAR’S EVE OUTFIT ISN’T ALWAYS WHAT YOU EXPECT

“My favourite New Year’s Eve outfit was probably one I wore on a boat: my warmest socks, jeans, a jumper and a huge puffer jacket.”

AVOID BEING EITHER TOO HOT OR TOO COLD

“You don’t want to worry about the temperature, so think about where you’re going and what you will be doing beforehand.”

PAY NO MIND TO GETTING IT WRONG

“I’m sure I had New Year’s Eve outfit disasters when I was younger, but I didn’t notice, so who cares?!”

DO GO ALL OUT

“Even more so now with COVID-19, loungewear has become king. So, for New Year’s Eve, I think it's a better time than any to go all out and bring a little glamour to your look.”

WEAR SHOES THAT YOU’RE COMFORTABLE IN

“Nobody wants to be walking the streets barefoot on New Year’s Day because their shoes are too painful to walk in!”

DRESS FOR THE YEAR YOU WANT TO HAVE

“On New Year’s Eve I try to come as my best self for the year ahead! I want my look to reflect that feeling of optimism.”

INSTAGRAM ISN’T ALWAYS THE BEST PERSONAL STYLIST

“One New Year’s Eve I bought a very popular Instagram dress that I had seen all over my feed. It was lovely but it just wasn’t right for my body, and had me feeling quite self-conscious all night. I had to spend more time checking if it was covering my derrière than dancing and enjoying the festivities.”

BOOTS ARE A GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO TRAINERS

“I love pairing trainers with a glamorous look, but I know that’s not for everyone. A great boot is a fabulous alternative if you want height without sacrificing comfort. However, if you’re one of those people who can deal with heels, I’d say the higher the better! We love drama in a New Year’s Eve Look!”

TAKE INSPIRATION FROM THE PAST

“I’ve always loved thinking of Jane Birkin in that fringe flapper dress for New Year’s Eve inspiration if I’m going out.”

STAYING AT HOME DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN GIVING UP

“For a stay-at-home celebration, I’d wear a beautiful all-black long flared trouser with a sleeveless top, bangles and maybe a mule.”

CONSIDER INCORPORATING VINTAGE INTO YOUR LOOK

“My favourite New Year’s Eve outfit was my mum’s black and white blazer from the 80s, a pair of cigarette trousers and red lipstick.”

COMBAT INDECISION

“I try to think if I had one outfit to wear every day for the entire new year, what would that be. And go for that.”

IF YOU FIND A SHOE YOU LOVE, STICK WITH IT

“I have a pair of vintage heeled Chanel sandals which have been my New Year’s Eve shoes for three years in a row now. I love them.”
