ROLLIN’ WITH MY HOMIES

The greatest party scenes in film, ever.

Who throws the greatest parties? Jay Gatsby or rebellious high school teenagers? Would you have rather partied with the popular kids in the 60s, or the porn stars of the 70s? From disco dancing to dirty dancing, we consider the movies’ greatest party scenes - the soirées we saw and wished we’d attended - to give some much-needed film inspiration for a party-free New Year’s Eve.

ROMEO & JULIET

VIBE: The party that has it all - drama, dancing, hallucinations, costume, excess!
PARTY SONG: Young Hearts Run Free, Candi Staton
GREATEST PARTY ENSEMBLE: Oof, difficult one. Is it Juliet’s angel costume? Is it Lady Capulet as Cleopatra? Nope, with that wig + stockings combo, it’s got to go to Mercutio in drag.
BEST MOVIE QUOTE: “Did my heart love ‘til now? Forswear its sight. For I never saw true beauty ‘til this night.”

PARTY SCORE: 10/10

CLUELESS

VIBE: The epitome of a 90s high school party, within the first minute of this scene Cher teaches us EVERYTHING you need to know about the laws of life.
PARTY SONG: Rollin’ With My Homies, Coolio
GREATEST PARTY ENSEMBLE: No question - Cher’s Alaia red dress with matching feather-trim coat and satin Mary Janes.
BEST MOVIE QUOTE: “Do you prefer fashion victim, or ensembly challenged?"

PARTY SCORE: Because Tai gets knocked out and Cher's shoes get stained - 6/10

ALMOST FAMOUS

VIBE: The ultimate rock ‘n’ roll, ‘I’m with the band’, ‘on the road’ film – Almost Famous is filled with acid-fuelled party scenes with fans, groupies and Bob Dylan.
PARTY SONG: Something In The Air, Thunderclap Newman
GREATEST PARTY ENSEMBLE: Penny Lane’s sheepskin Afghan coat with only underwear below has to be the ultimate groupie reference of all time.
BEST MOVIE QUOTE:
“The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what we share with someone else when we’re uncool.”

PARTY SCORE: 9/10

DIRTY DANCING

VIBE: The Catskills holiday resort in 1963, where the staff wait on the wealthy by day, and dance dirty by night.
PARTY SONG: Do You Love Me, The Contours
GREATEST PARTY ENSEMBLE: With the denim shorts and leotards, you may be thinking Baby’s outfits are the best in this film, but in this scene, it has to go to Johnny’s billowing white shirt and skintight high black pants, that fully expose the free movement of his hips.
BEST MOVIE QUOTE: “I carried a watermelon”

PARTY SCORE: 8/10

ROMY & MICHELE’S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION

VIBE: A 90s club with a dance floor and disco ball that brings a touch of Studio 54.
PARTY SONG: Staying Alive, N-Trance
GREATEST PARTY ENSEMBLE: It’s a tie between Romy’s holographic blue feathered micro dress and Michele’s leopard print and red leather combo.
BEST MOVIE QUOTE: “You’re a bad person with an ugly heart, and we don’t give a flying fuck what you think.”

PARTY SCORE: For the dance sequence alone, 7/10

BASIC INSTINCT

VIBE: Sharon Stone seducing Michel Douglas. In a church-turned-nightclub. This scene is pure sex.
PARTY SONG: Blue, LaTour
GREATEST PARTY ENSEMBLE: Definitely not Michael Douglas’ V-neck.
BEST MOVIE QUOTE: “You know I don’t like to wear any underwear, don’t you, Nick?”

PARTY SCORE: 7/10

BOOGIE NIGHTS

VIBE: A pool party for the stars of the Golden Age of Porn. What more could you want!
PARTY SONG: Spill the Wine, Eric Burdon & War
GREATEST PARTY ENSEMBLE: Heather Graham as Rollergirl… KOICON!
BEST MOVIE QUOTE: “I got a feeling that behind those jeans is something wonderful just waiting to get out.”

PARTY SCORE: 7/10

DAZED AND CONFUSED

VIBE: Last day of high school in 1978. The real party was busted but the only thing that really matters is hanging out with your friends, getting drunk, and securing those Aerosmith tickets.
PARTY SONG: Low Rider, War
GREATEST PARTY ENSEMBLE: Who can forget Milla Jovovich’s suede fringe waistcoat and bell-bottom jeans?
BEST MOVIE QUOTE: The very first words Matthew McConaughey ever said on film; “Alright, alright alright," which have since become his traemark.

PARTY SCORE: As it’s mainly cruising around in a car; 6/10

BOOK SMART

VIBE: The girls begin their night on a boat, then set off to a theatrical murder mystery and end up at a house party with the school's coolest teacher. But the unrivalled scene for us is when they do karaoke.
PARTY SONG: You Oughta Know, Alanis Morisette
BEST PARTY ENSEMBLE: Without question Gigi (played superbly by Billie Lourd) is best dressed in this entire film. That faux fur jacket, the bucket hat and her bohemian sensibility smells like teen spirit.
BEST MOVIE QUOTE: “I lost my virginity in what I thought was a park but… it turned out to be a graveyard, and now the ghosts live inside my eggs waiting to be reborn.”

PARTY SCORE: 9/10

THE GREAT GATSBY

VIBE: Putting the extra in extravagant - a Gatsby party is the epitome of a great night out in the Jazz age.
PARTY SONG: A Little Party Never Killed Nobody, Fergie
GREATEST PARTY ENSEMBLE: Nick Carraway’s bowler hat and bowtie combo. The flapper dresses. It’s too much to choose.
BEST MOVIE QUOTE: “I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few guests who had been invited. People were not invited – they just went there.”

PARTY SCORE: 10/10
