The cult London label with a f*ck you attitude

When Poster Girl hit London Fashion Week with their debut show in 2017, it was a breath of (very raunchy) fresh air. Now, five years later, things are only getting better for the brand. We caught up with them to find out more.

Did you really write your first ideas for Poster Girl on the back of a receipt?

We did…. we wrote a list of all the garments that would be in our first chainmail mesh collection. Back then we called it ‘Series 1.0’; it was super small – only 4 dresses a skirt and a top, I think. It took months of development to understand the unique fabric and find new techniques and solutions (to sew it was a nightmare). At the time it was kind of an epiphany moment we both had, it couldn’t have felt more right.

Who does what in this design duo?

Believe it or not, it's very balanced. Design is what we are both most passionate about and where our greatest strengths lie. This is how we met (on the Womenswear course at Central Saint Martins) and quickly discovered we had similar aesthetics. The beauty about designing as a duo is we each have unique ideas that we can then combine into hybrid designs.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

We find inspiration in so many ways, whether its something as raw as the elements, to textures and emotions. We love to explore ideas from new environments to create our own world in each collection that we can invite you into.

A lot of your designs could be considered the new shapewear, what do you make of this?

We have used the term ‘shapewear’ deliberately to describe this brand new category we have created as the garments really cinch you in the best places in a supportive, body-forming way. The designs are structured to tighten the waist and release the curves with the perfect amount of retention and support, like that of a functional shapewear garment.

Do you think your designs are just for women?

No, they are for everyone. Poster Girl is a feeling, not a person. You just need to embody it!

Let’s talk about your heart cut-outs in your AW22 collection, specifically the bum cut-out – cheeky! How did that come about? And also, why the heart motif?

We love this idea of the ‘new sexy’ so we had this thought of a bum cleavage peephole, it’s also adds a bit of humour which we feel is always really important. The heart has become synonymous with our shapewear pieces, the crystal heart buttons highlight all the peepholes. It’s a signature of ours so it seems natural to continue this in other fabrications.

How should someone style a Poster Girl dress, top, or bodysuit?

We’ve seen so many girls (and boys) style Poster Girl in such fun ways, we think that’s the beauty of it – there isn’t one way to wear it. That’s why for our AW22 collection we developed the shapewear even more so some pieces were 5-in-one – you could wear as a jumpsuit, dress, stockings, gloves or top.

What is the future for Poster Girl?

As for the near future we are excited for SS23 as it marks the first time doing handbags which we’ve been dying to do for ages. There’s something in the pipeline for December too but we can’t tell you yet!
