New wave tailoring and modern femininity

Words by Flora Macdonald Johnston

Lado Bokuchava burst onto the Tbilisi fashion scene by artfully combing two of its elements: a polished aesthetic and a deep affinity with club culture. His brand has evolved to become a pioneer in new wave tailoring and modern femininity. From beautifully crafted blazers to sumptuous vegan leather separates, his Iatest KOIBIRD arrivals are some of his best pieces yet. Here, I deep dive into a few of my favourites.

Each year designers bring out new iterations of the classic leather jacket, but it’s not often that one captures my heart quite so intensely as this. Lado Bokuchava has managed to elevate the staple to chic new heights. Its buttery vegan leather has been sculpted to fit the body, and I like how its pocket and cup detailing give it a unique edge. While it might scream evening wear, I think it has a place in the office too. Pair with the matching vegan leather trousers.

Everyone needs a maxi skirt in their wardrobe that can be thrown on easily and paired with anything. For me, this particular maxi skirt's magic lies with its unexpected detailing. You can embrace its cut-out and proudly display it by pairing it with a cropped black tank top, or, for the more reserved – and if dashing between meetings – simply layer it with a boxy boyfriend shirt styled open and smart trainers. For those who enjoy a matching set, opt for Lado Bokuchava’s cropped black long-sleeved top and pair with glittering heels for an evening look.

Workwear rules have been rewritten post-pandemic, and this less formal attitude is something I can get behind. I love Lado Bokuchava’s take on a shirt dress. Its exaggerated lapels and cuffs still have the essence of a stiff office shirt, but its cinched waist adds a sexier edge. I would style it with cute kitten heels.

A transitional knit with shapewear detailing? Yes please. I often like my knitwear to take me from day to night (especially on holiday to wear on cool evenings with flowing wide leg trousers and maxi skirts). The geometric cut-out on the chest and shoulders of this pink beauty keep it interesting and elevates it from your standard rollneck.

As I said above, the rules of what one can wear to the office have shifted. Perhaps this is most apparent in Lado Bokuchava’s modern take on a suit skirt. Fusing traditional suit pockets with an edgy asymmetric hemline, this skirts screams femme-fatale – and I am here for it. Embrace this new era of suiting and wear with its matching cropped blazer with wrap-around tie.
