The do’s and don’ts

WORDS BY Flora Macdonald Johnston

Discovering the perfect piece of swimwear is like winning the lottery. We all have that one much-beloved piece, that bikini that cuts just at the right place, never letting any side-boob show no matter how long you dance for or how many salty margaritas you drink. Or perhaps you have, like me, that trusty one-piece you bought years ago from that little shop (god knows the name) in the middle of that tiny town (you forget which), that has never failed to keep its shape, colour and design. But most importantly, your lucky find always keeps you feeling confident and looking fabulous.

This, however, does not solve the age-old conundrum that rears its ugly head each summer: finding a new, flattering - and stylish - piece of swim kit. It all starts with knowing your body type, as well as figuring out your style. Luckily for you, our new resort edit has multiple pieces to suit all body (and personality) types whether you enjoy embellishments, frills and thrills, or prefer to keep it minimalist and clean.

I fall under this camp - and it’s a frustrating one. Most cuts of swimwear will be flattering to the waist and hips yet make my shoulders appear as wide as the mediterranean sea. The trick here, and it sounds counterproductive so bare with me, is to accentuate the shoulder shape to create the illusion proportion.

Play around with one-pieces and bikinis that have plenty of embellishment (especially around the shoulders) such as Maygel Coronel's colourful ruffle swimsuits. They also have the added benefit of two-in-one styling as the shoulder details can be worn on or off to easily transition your swimsuit from beach to beach bar. Remember that playing with shape and detailing around the neckline and shoulders will help even out your body shape.

For those with no curvature, embrace it! Your body type lends itself well to column-like shapes and structures, all you need to do is think of the finer details. Look for swimsuits with patterns that draw the eye in a vertical way – think asymmetric or strapless swimsuits.

Brazilian label Adriana Degreas is a champion of great cuts, and her knowledge of pattern is unparalleled. Try the Deco Shell one-shoulder swimsuit. It’s perfect for the poolside but, pair with its matching feather trimmed trousers and heels, and I would wager you’re party-ready too.

This shape has delicate shoulders with a curvier bum and hips, if this speaks to you, you fall into the Beyonce and J-Lo camp (I am quite frankly jealous!). For this, you need to follow the golden rule of three, which involves thinking 'up':
1. Halter or triangle bikinis will accentuate a slim waist
2. High waist or high cut briefs will elongate legs
3. Pattern and colour are your friend and will visually create balance

‘Luckily, there are a lot bikinis that fulfil these qualities – and they’re all wildly different. Oseree’s sequin bandana bikini doesn’t only have a halterneck and high-cut bottoms, it also doubles as a party look – just add the sequin wrap skirt.’

This is a common body type. A fuller bust with smaller waist and wider hips. For this, shopping is easy (is that applause and whooping I hear?). Classic bikini and bra styles will make your figure sing. Be sure to go for glamorous embellishment, sequins and chains. There is one small snag, however, and that's the need to support the bust correctly, so search for bikinis with underwiring or fuller straps to ensure you’re comfortable and feeling confident.

I particularly enjoy the print (and support) this twist-style bust from Verdelimon gives. And, if you want to go all out, they have matching briefs and a beach cover-up too.
