Global lockdowns gave women the chance to explore their bodies and attitudes to sex itself. Ultimately, this ushered in a new age of female sexuality. Our latest concept, Sex Becomes Her, is a sartorial exploration of this. Inspired in part by the iconic 90s film Death Becomes Her, this season brings focus to the body, and explores what it means to feel good owning your sexuality whilst making bold fashion choices.
Shapewear and jackets reveal flesh in unexpected places (à la Poster Girl), while accentuated silhouettes hug the body and lengths are exaggerated brushing floors and skimming thighs. There’s no longer a sense of shame in making an effort. It’s encouraged. A central theme is trophy dressing. But, in typical KOIBIRD fashion, this is turned on its head: it’s about self-love rather than self-objectification. Enter AREA’s voluminous skirt-cum-corset hybrids that highlight the body’s waistline and are outlined in crystal studs and spikes. They’re as deadly as they are beautiful. Similarly, cult Ukrainian label NUÉ, have created crystal-adorned twisted bralettes and sparkling miniskirts.

Using recycled materials, fabric offcuts and discarded sequins, Paris-based label Germanier turns what was once trash into treasure. Sequin gowns and cocktail dresses meet oversized feather detailing, waists become smaller and shoulders much bigger. This season also sees sustainable label Connor Ives make his KOIBIRD debut with floor-length gowns created from recycled T-shirts and halterneck dresses fashioned from vintage silk scarves. At KOIBIRD, the devil is always in the details with crystals, studs, feathers and an abundance of sparkle. Partywear label NERVI, famed for their flamboyant kaftan-like dresses, has created colourways exclusive to KOIBIRD. Spirited Italian label DES_PHEMMES, known for its crafty take on ready-to-wear, mixes intriguing materials to stunning effect – just look at its crystal-embellished tie-dye gown. Up the romance in Rodarte, where delicate silk slip dresses are sexed up with lace and slits, and knitted floor-length cardigans are given a boudoir twist with fluffy cuffs and trims.
